Yahoo buys Tumblr. User Community Reacts. What is Tumblr?

Yahoo buys Tumblr, users angryYahoo buys Tumblr. One billion dollars! Users furious and in rage online.

Many people are asking the question, what is Tumblr and why did Yahoo buy it for a billion dollars?
Tumblr is a unique place where people feel a part of a community, it is really a micro-blogging set up.
Here is what their own site says they are:

Tumblr lets you effortlessly share anything.
Post text, photos, quotes, links, music and videos from your browser, phone, desktop, e-mail or wherever you happen to be. You can customize everything, from colors to your theme’s HTML.

Tumblr is like a blogging, social media group set up. It is unique in that it is a gathering and sharing place for people.
When I say mircroblogging, that is where you share shorter articles, and more of a thought streaming set up like twitter vs. WordPress, which has blossomed into a full website platform and can be used for anything now and most businesses I know are switching over to it for ease of updates and use and how search engine friendly it is. Now with Tumblr being sold to Yahoo, the core users are worried, and historically if you look at many big companies buying up the smaller ones, they have good reason.  Also Yahoo does not have a good track record with companies it has bought.

Here are some facts about Tumblr.

How big is Tumblr?

Tumblr currently claims 108.4 million blogs with 50.9 billion posts/items posted.

Who is this guy David Karp, who is only 26 and now a billionaire?

Tumblr founder David Karp was born and raised in New York City, attending the Bronx High School Science before dropping out at age 15. An internship at Frederator Studios led to a gig leading product at UrbanBaby. When CNET acquired the company in 2005, Karp started his own development agency, Davidville. In 2007 his team launched Tumblr, now the home and platform for more than 100 million creators. As a top 15 US network, Tumblr serves an audience of more than 170 million people worldwide.

If you are a regular reader of this website, or know me, you know I am all about WordPress.

So what is the difference between WordPress and Tumblr?

Tunblr is a micro blogging environment for simple, quick blogging with support for posts, images, quotes, video, audio and links – all you need to get your message out as quick as possible. A simple interface for super fast blogging more like the old style journal type postings.  Quick and simple, with lots of short content and images. It is really more of a social media type interface, with tons of photos, cartoons and animated gifs that are shared with paragraphs of thoughts and feelings. People feel part of a community there. You have fanzine type sections and  basically you name it and you will find it. Once you join you just do a search for topics you are interested in and you start communicating. It is unique. It is nothing like WordPress. The whole interface is more of a social media connecting with other people set up. They host you and you are more of a participant rather then building your own fully functioning website. Though some people do run stores on tumblr, and use it for their website.  I personally found it hard to navigate and I could not find one place where I could see a list of sites I would to check out. I did find tons of fantasy type or gamer sites though. That seemed to be the majority of what I could find. When I tried to look for business tumblr sites or things like that I got lots of tiny 3 or 4 posts that were really spammy, like you get on your websites. Someone obviously told scammers and MLM pyramid people to put something up on tumblr. tumblr is very obviously not designed to run a business site on. One guy had comments from the gamers after all his “business” related lecturing posts, saying stuff like “who tries to run a business on tumblr?” I think if you check out tumblr, you will quickly see what it is for and what it is not for. I found a good article that really details who uses tumblr and if it would be right for you.  The Pros and Cons Of Tumblr For Small Business

WordPress is a full on content management system that you self host, and own 100%. One of the really great things about WordPress is you self host your site, you own it completely.
No one is selling WordPress the company because WordPress is an open source product, which means many people maintain it, and it is a like a group sourced system.  No one can change what you do, no one can yank the rug out from under you. For me having watched so many companies and ideas online come and go, this is a huge reason alone to own a self hosted WordPress website.

Here is a more technical explanation.

WordPress is a free and open source blogging tool and a content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL. It has many features including a plug-in architecture and a template system. WordPress is used by over 14.7% of Alexa Internet’s “top 1 million” websites and as of August 2011 manages 22% of all new websites. WordPress is currently the most popular blogging system in use on the Web, powering over 100 million websites worldwide.

So back to tumblr and this billion dollar buy out.

The tumblr community is in a tizzy about this acquisition,  by Yahoo, and who can blame them? With this sale of the company to Yahoo for $1.1 billion who knows what will happen to the tumblr website now?
Yahoo is the most spammy, hackable, ad filled, tacky sites around. How many of you get spam email from your friends yahoo accounts who are hacked on a regular basis?
I am amazed at how much spam I get from yahoo hacked accounts and it totally sucks because I am really careful with my business email and so many of my contacts have used a yahoo account and been hacked. The spam goes on for years. If you go to any of the Yahoo dead or dying sections, there are ads and it is just all so ugly too.

Part of what made tumblr so enjoyable was the clean ad free interface. Well when a company pays $1.1 billion.for another company, they are not going to leave off ads, especially not Yahoo. Marrisa is saying they will create tasteful ads that blend with the site… now remember she comes from Google, so she knows how to do ads, but Google adsense is not known for their blending tasteful adsense layouts either. An ad is an ad, period. They tend to be ugly and trying to get your attention. I will be interested to see how this all plays out.

The deal could backfire though if Yahoo’s effort to make more money alienate a Tumblr user base that so far has been subjected to hardly any advertising during the service’s six-year history.

“Yahoo has to manage this acquisition in a way that keeps Tumblr’s user base while trying to add advertising, which historically tends to turn off a lot of people,” said Forrester Research analyst Zachary Reiss-Davis.

Should Tumblr of sold to Yahoo?

I have been online since 1998, and I have watched many, many sites come and go leaving their users stranding and in distress. Here is my list for the graveyard of closed and failed social media, blogging, interactive sites in the last 10 years. Often times when these companies get sold and eaten up by the big guys, they die a quick death later. Let’s take a look.

Failed Social Media Sites,Google products graveyard.

Graveyard of failed social media, blogging, and online interactive communities.

I have been online since 1998.  I have watched many sites come and go often leaving their users stranded and in distress.
Today when they announced Yahoo bought Tumblr, I wondered, will Yahoo be one in a long list of big companies who ruin a good thing once they buy it? Often times when these companies get sold and eaten up by the big guys, they die a quick death later. Here is my list for the graveyard of closed and failed social media, blogging, interactive sites in the last 10 years. Let’s take a look.

Failed Social Media and online sites and products

Vox- a blogging website community.
Vox was an Internet blogging service run by Six Apart. The site ran from October 26, 2006 to September 30, 2010. Vox was a blogging site that was very loved and closed.
Clients came to me needing a website as soon as they announced the shutdown.

MobileMe-Apple offered people a place to build and run a free website. (formerly .Mac and iTools) , MobileMe: July 9, 2008 – June 30, 2012, was a subscription-based collection of online services and software offered by Apple Inc. All services were being gradually transitioned and replaced by iCloud . The service ceased as of June 30, 2012, with transfers to iCloud available until July 31, 2012. Afterwards, all data was deleted, and the email addresses of accounts not transferred to iCloud were marked as unused.
I had clients in a panic who needed a website after this shut them down.

Some sites that are gone, and some are still up but basically dying or dead and might as well be in the Graveyard.

Bebo:  AOL bought Bebo from it’s founders in 2008 for 850 million.  This was later considered one of the worst deals ever. AOL announced plans shut down or sell Bebo  on June 16, 2010. The property was sold to Criterion Capital Partners for an undisclosed amount, believed to be around $10 million. (Ouch!) In December 2010, AIM eliminated access to AOL chat rooms noting a marked decline of patronage in recent months.
Bebo today: In May 2013, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. I would have to say, if you are a Bebo user, it may be time to plan your exit.

Del.icio.us: Delicious (formerly del.icio.us) is a social bookmarking web service for storing, sharing, and discovering web bookmarks. The site was founded by Joshua Schachter in 2003 and acquired by Yahoo! in 2005. By the end of 2008, the service claimed more than 5.3 million users and 180 million unique bookmarked URLs.The site was sold to AVOS Systems on April 27, 2011 and relaunched in a “back to beta” state on September 27 that year.
Recently they did another redesign and launch in Jan 2013, with more of a facebook type interface, but it would appear to little to late.  Core users are fed up and you can find many negative comments about how cumbersome and bloated this bookmarking service is now.

Dead google products, failed social media productsGoogle really owns it’s own private graveyard.

Let’s envision the google car driving and filming these departed ideas and some near death now, as we visit the Google Graveyard.

igoogle, will be closed in Nov 2013. So many people use this as their start/homepage including me and there is really nothing else like it.
I will be doing some research and trying to find a replacement and will be blogging about it before the Nov 2013 closure.
Google ReaderIf you are actively using Feedburner, I think it’s time to start taking full possession of your feeds again (which isn’t easy). RSS may still be the plumbing that makes a lot of applications tick, but don’t look for Google to provide a platform for RSS much longer. Read more from this article on techcrunch here and for another good article on this situation click here:

Google bought a really cool program called “Bumptop” in 2010, and promptly killed it.
You could turn your desktop into a totally customized 3D room with folders in piles, and you just dragged and dropped everything or touchpad,
It was really fun.
If you want to see how cool it was , watch the TED video here.

Google also abandoned the Google Toolbar for Firefox, after unceremoniously discontinuing several APIs the previous month, including APIs for Code Search, Diacritize, Feedburner, Finance, PowerMeter, Sidewiki, and Wave. In addition, the company discontinued its 13-year-old Google Friends newsletter and Google Directory in July 2011.

One of the reasons I do not recommend people get a blog on “blogger, blogspot or google blogs, I am not not sure what the official name is now.  I feel like many of their other products, they can just shut this down one day when it makes sense for them to shut it down. Now I do not think that will actually happen because Google is trying to integrate blogger with all your google products. They want Google Plus and everything in one place and to all be connected. To me no professional runs their site on a free blog service. There are many limitations with a free blog. I highly recommend people start one for practice and learning purposes, but once you are ready to really launch your books, products, or professional website, you should have a professionally set up website.  For me that means a well done customized WordPress premium theme with all the back end stuff you need done right.
I have converted many blogger sites to WordPress. It is a little tricky but if you know what you are doing you can make it work.
They do have a feature you can find to export your posts.

If you have some other companies I missed, please leave those for me in the comment section. I am sure I missed some good ones.

How to block an IP or Country in WordPress or your web hosting. Avoid spam and hackers.

How to block spam by country or ipHow to block an IP or Country on your website and on WordPress.

We all have been spammed by other countries. I am sure you have asked yourself, what do they get out of it exactly?
Honestly even with some research, I could not find a good answer. It is really very pointless because most of us delete it.
I am not sure what the big plan is for these people who leave these spam comments with spammy links. The video I made will show you how to block an IP and country in your web hosting with the cpanel.  I will show you a plugin for WordPress that blocks people by country. I have found that the bulk of my problems, spam wise, hacker wise and malicious intent wise come from Russia, Turkey, Ukraine and Belgium.

It was nice to be able to block those countries. Also if you have a troll or mean person leaving mean or rude comments on your website, you can block just their IP! This means they will not have access to your website. So that is nice too.

The video is easier to see if you view it in full screen. For me the resolution takes a minute to sharpen after I make things full width.
Leave a comment if this helps you out. Real comments are always most welcome. :-P

Free Images, Copyright Free Images and Resources Online

How and where do I find free images or copyright free images for my website?

Websites need images. For pop, color, interest, and direction. Images enhance your website and also if you set them up correctly , they are tools for SEO, (Search Engine Optimization).
My friend Arun Basil Lal, who runs the excellent website, Million Clues, sent me some great places to find free images.  Be sure to visit his website, It is packed with amazing and helpful information about working online.

Free Quality Image Galleries-by Arun Basil Lal

Free images and copyright free images onlineStock Exchange: I had been using SXC from my Blogger days both for blog and other design works. Images are high quality and the search is pretty accurate. All images are bounded by the standard restrictions and the owner has to be notified for some images. You will need a free account to download any images. Images in SXC are often made with an illustrative hook in mind, so it’s the best place to find images for blogs. (The image in this post was from SXC!)

Flickr
: This is a store of all kinds of images from heavily photoshoped cool ones to usual pictures from daily life. I use the advanced search of Flickr where we can specify to show just those images licensed under the creative commons. If you are on a look for images from daily life, like trains, or people or signs, turn to Flickr.
But often Flickr users prefer to get attributed for using their images, so you will have to add Image credits with every other post. You need a free Flickr account.

Google Image Search: Google has done a good job in organizing the images on the web. Google image search is awesome place to find images, but there is no guarantee on its quality or copyright, so it’s last on my list. Make sure that you visit the landing page and confirm that the image is free to use before you add it on yours.

Don’t forget to save the images that you find while casual browsing for later use. I have a vast collection of images offline which I have collected over time. Make one yourself.

Always read the terms and conditions before you use images. Some images are free to use, but not free to edit, some need attribution, play it safe. :P

Stock photos are an essential part of web and graphic design. There are tons of stock photos agencies that offer high quality photos, however, the price is not always affordable especially when working on a tight budget or sometimes with no budget at all. The solution in this case is finding free stock photos something that isn’t always easy, in order to make this process easier I have compiled a list with sites that offer free stock photos. Enjoy

Fake Linkedin email-connect-reminders-Invitation Notification

Fake Linkedin Email SafetyFake Linkedin Email-Beware

Every day I get new spam, and some of it can be dangerous.Today I got my first fake Linkedin email. When I clicked the button to check it out, I was taken to a poker website.
That was actually lucky, because I could of opened a malware file or computer exploit.
What spammers, hackers and other nefarious evil people do to get access to you and your computer is what is called “spoofing”.

They take a legitimate email, like Linkedin, Paypal or banks, and copy all the graphics and then insert their own links into the email.
It is quite simple to do and so easy to fall for. These fake Linkedin emails, fake Paypal emails and fake FedEx, UPS and more are becoming a daily occurrence.

My advice? For the fake Linkedin emails, if you do not recognize the person who is asking to connect with you, just go to your Linkedin account and login onto the website.
You will see if that invite is in there and you will know you have gotten a bad email.
Trash it and carry on. Be wary, be careful and do not trust outside emails that make no sense to you or tell you have gotten money or an UPS or FEDEX delivery notice just to name a few.
Most of the time if you just Google the email in question, you will quickly find a link to the real companies website warning you about that email.
Google is your friend in these kinds of problems, be sure to start utilizing it.  Also you can always go to the actual websites like Facebook, Linkedin and Paypal to check these things safely rather then risk opening a dangerous fake email.

Here are some good website links that explain more about this threat.

How to safely check “view source” on fake email

How to safely check your email, called “view source” video.

Fake Email, Email Scams, Email Viruses and Malware.

Every day I get some very bad and dangerous email in my inbox. I run so many websites and have over 10 business email addresses, so between all of those I get quite the variety of fraudulent email.
I have been teaching about email and Internet Safety since 1999.

Did you know there is a way you can look at your questionable email safely?

Many of the latest fraud emails say they are from Payment locations, such as your bank, or PayPal, or it may say you missed a UPS or Fed Ex delivery ,or a bill is due, or the bank needs you to click something to confirm, or even a fake, “you have been paid” email. The go to great lengths to look as real as possible and use enticing subject lines.

There are so many fraud scams and fake emails it is overwhelming and very easy to be fooled. Here is a breakdown of one such email I recently got in my inbox.

Subject Line: Completed: Please DocuSign this document: Confidential Company Agreement 2013..pdf and it showed the email coming from me to myself!

This one spoofs your own email address and says it comes from yourself.
Big warning lights went off for me when I saw that PDF attachment.

I googled Docusign and quickly found that is aware of this fake email and has a full warning on their website.

Another set of fake emails I have been viewing message source,  and getting lots of virus emails from lately is“securebank.com”

Secure Bank does not seem to be a real bank and the website has a warning about these emails here.

http://www.securebank.com/

When you view source and see an address in the fake email, you can copy and paste it and go there to check.

Most of the major companies and banks will also have warnings about these emails on their site. If ever in doubt call or google the company and the subject line from the email and you will immediately see all the fraud warnings in the search engines and on the websites they supposedly came from.

Be sure you have good anti virus software installed on your computer first, just in case the website is infected too.
I use Avast the free version for over 12 years now and it is the best. It has protected all my computers.
I have a teenager who goes to a many web sites that hackers love to infect. Sites that offer things like free screensavers and free downloads,  so my computers get put through the acid test for safety.
I highly recommend Avast the free version. Many a time their warning system has saved us from disaster. They also warn you about your emails.

  1. Do not click open the email.
  2. View Message Source instead. You cannot get infected or have a problem this way, but you can still read the message safely.
  3. Do not open any attachments or download anything from a suspicious email
  4. Google the subject in the email and see what comes up

Pitfalls of Working with Humans

Be kind and thank people for their hard work“All things are difficult before they are easy. “

Thomas Fuller

I am not a person who writes anything personal on the web.
I have always kept all my articles and contributions online as part of my business related work.
Anyone who has worked with me or knows me, knows I go above the call of duty.
I love helping people. I enjoy teaching and empowering people online.
Recently I have hit the over 200 client mark and I guess what happens is called growing pains.
The little personal website company has to start tightening up a bit and being a bit more picky with the work and not letting themselves get taken advantage of.
I guess sometimes  the cosmos send you a message.
I had a new customer referred to me by someone in one of my training classes. This person who asked me to redo a site for them, and move it over to new hosting. They were in a hurry and they already had a blogging  website up and running. They had some other work online they do on a regular basis as well. This is more online experience then most people I work with.

I thought it would be a simple job and for the most part it was in the grand scheme of what I do. We ran into some minor troubles moving it from the paid part of WordPress.com , (please do not buy your domain name and hosting from them), just get your own hosting and buy your domain name from a domain name company.

I spent extra hours doing a banner for free, building a new design and customizing it. Then dealing with the hassles of trying to move from WordPress.com paid section and eventually we got everything done. Usually at this point I have a very grateful client and I do appreciate it when people thank me. It is a nice thing. Most people are very kind and quite thankful. It helps make all the extra unpaid hours I give feel like they matter.

When all was done I ended up with an email from this person.  They told me I should not of worked with them until they knew more and until they were more educated about how to use their website.  They told me I should of figured out their level of experience and turned them down or had them learn more first with an online class.
Instead of thanking me for going out of my way, working many extra hours, doing a free graphic banner for them, and rushing the work to get their site up by their deadline,  they told me I should of had them take a beginner online class first.
I knew this person was annoyed that they did not know enough by their definition of “enough”.
Not mine.

Honestly this the first time I have ever been told I should not of not of helped someone because they don’t know enough.
What do you think about that? If you hire a web person to do a job, isn’t it your job to know what you know and not mine to tell you what you don’t know.  Should I give a test to all my potential clients and tell them,  “no sorry you don’t meet the standards, since you don’t know what an URL or browser is, therefore I can’t do your web work for you”?  What are the “standards”. Whose standards?

I would love to get some feedback in the comment section on this.

(Good SEO backlink  for you.)
I find some people who want things to be perfect or are perfectionists have a very hard time working online. It is a bit of rough and tumble.
You have to find your own answers often, and one of the most important lessons you will learn while working online, is things are never perfect.
You will never know it all, and you have to let go of the need to know everything or be “perfect” at it.
There is always something going wrong, always. Browsers, computers, email, glitches, shopping carts break, photos need resizing, the list is endless! One of my other articles is “The Zen of Getting Started Online“.
This is what I believe is the best way to stay sane while working online. You have to stay focused and let go of perfection.
It will never happen. You may have one perfect page, one perfect design that works for a few years, or one perfect logo, but something always happens, it all evolves and you have to stay nimble and sharp to keep up .

Yet you only have to keep up with what you want and are interested in for your site and your work.
The Internet is too big to know it all and master it all.  To all of you who have been so wonderful to work with and kind and grateful,
I am sending you all my good mojo right now and letting myself slip back into an attitude of gratitude. I work with so many lovely amazing people. I am truly blessed.
Tomorrow is a new day.

Web Terms and Definitions Quick Guide

Web Terminology, Web Terms and Quick Glossary

Web Terminology, Web Terms and Quick GlossaryWeb Terms and terminology can be confusing. Often when I work with people, they tell me they do not understand the web terms that I am  talking about.
This led me the realization that I needed to start building an online web terminology and definitions everyman type of dictionary that was easy to understand.  When I looked at the other online dictionary websites offering web Terms and definitions , I still found many of their definitions hard to understand. So this the start of my dictionary, which is going to be part of my WordPress Paid Support membership website. I am building this now and launching in February 2013. Here a few of the most common Web Terms and Definitions which I am frequently asked about.

Web Hosting

In a general sense, “hosting” refers to “web site hosting” which is the business of providing the equipment and services required to display Web sites. The business of hosting also involves maintaining files and providing fast Internet connections. If you run a Web site or do business on the Web, you have a host and you know the importance of having a good, reliable host. Hosting is very affordable nowadays; the most important factor continues to be good customer service, make sure they have it!

WordPress

WordPress started as just a blogging system, but has evolved to be used as full content management system that you can run a powerful and full website on. It offers many enhancement and functions through the thousands of plugins, widgets, and themes.

Plugins

A plug-in is a small program, or combination of programs, that sits on top of your WordPress installation and increases the functionality of your website in some way. (Translation: Plug-ins allow your blog to have more features and to do more than it could when you first installed it.)

Plugins integrate seamlessly with WordPress so as a user you don’t have to do any coding or technical stuff to use them. Just install them, follow set up directions and you are good to go.

Spam

Spam is the use of electronic messaging systems to send unsolicited bulk messages, especially advertising, indiscriminately. While the most widely recognized form of spam is e-mail spam, the term is applied to similar abuses in other media: such a comment spam on a website.

SEO

SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” It is the process of getting traffic from the “free,” “organic,” “editorial” or “natural” listings on search engines. All major search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing have such results, where web pages and other content such as videos or local listings are shown and ranked based on what the search engine considers most relevant to users

Spiders and Bots

Spiders and Bots “crawl” the web to give this information to the search engines.

A Web crawler is a computer program that browses the World Wide Web in a methodical, automated manner or in an orderly fashion.

Search Engine Bots

Search engines are, for the most part, entities that rely on automated software agents called spiders, crawlers, robots and bots. These bots are the seekers of content on the Internet, and from within individual web pages. These tools are key parts in how the search engines operate.

To be able to index the Internet, the search engines need a tool that is able to visit websites; navigate the websites; discern information about the website; decide what the website is about; and add that data to its index. This tool also has to be able to follow leads, or links from one website to the next, so that it can infinitely continue to gather information, and learn about the Internet. If it does its job properly, then the search engine has a good, valuable database, or index, and will deliver relevant results to a visitors query.

Google XML Site Maps- About Sitemaps

Sitemaps are a way to tell Google about pages on your site we might not otherwise discover. In its simplest terms, a XML Sitemap—usually called Sitemap, with a capital S—is a list of the pages on your website. Creating and submitting a Sitemap helps make sure that Google knows about all the pages on your site, including URLs that may not be discoverable by Google’s normal crawling process.

Social Bookmarking

Social bookmarking is a way to store, tag and share links across the internet.

When you find a web page that you find interesting, instead of having to remember the address of the webpage, you can simply save the address as a ‘bookmark’ in your browser (some browsers call them favorites). Social bookmarking is like saving favorites on your browser, except you are saving to a website that you can access from any computer in the world. But the part of social bookmarking is the ‘social’ part. You can share your favorites with other, using Facebook or twitter, or linked and other social media sites. This means that you can browse and search through content that other people have already decided is worth looking at.

Hyperlinks or “links”

A hyperlink (or link) is a reference to a location or document that the reader can directly follow, or that is followed automatically. You can click the link and be taken to another page, or a document using a “link”.

The content of the web link is just an URL or a location that is linked to something else.

URL

URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator, and is used to specify addresses on the World Wide Web. A URL is the fundamental network identification for any resource connected to the web (e.g., hypertext pages, images, and sound files).

The format can be http://askmepc.com or www.askmepc.com

The way browsers are set up today, you no longer need to enter the first part, http: or www.
You can simply enter the domain name in the address window of your browser, like askmepc.com, and your browser will take you there.

Browsers

A browser is software that accesses and displays pages and files on the web. Browsers require a connection to the Internet (e.g., through a cable modem, a direct Ethernet connection, or Wi-Fi). Popular web browsers include Firefox, Chrome, and Safari and Internet Explorer.

Social Media

“Social media” is a catch-all term for sites that may provide very different social actions. For instance, Twitter is a social site designed to let people share short messages or “updates” with others. Linkedin is more of a business/job network site where professionals share information and interact. Facebook, in is a full-blown social networking site that allows for sharing updates, photos, joining events and a variety of other activities.

Post/Blog Post

When working in WordPress, you have a post section. All that is, is what the software calls the section where you write and publish your articles. This is typically known as the “blog” section of your website.
