How to block a website in Google search results (getting rid of about.com)

how to block sites in googleThe site that forced me to finally figure out how to block sites in a search was about.com.
This advice is good for any sites you want to block however.

I really hate about.com
I hate all the old, old content they have, I hate that they come up as the first 1-5 search results no matter what I google. I cannot stand the look of the site and that they are stuffed with spammy ads.  I resent the fact that they  dominate the web search results by sheer numbers of articles and longevity of content, (they started up in 1997, which is a lifetime as in dog years for the Internet.)  I really resented them every time I did a search and there they popped up. When I was looking up their history, I discovered are now owned by the New York Times. Hmmm :(

One way to block results from a site you do not want is to add -about.com or -whateversite.com you do not like, so your search looks like this, “turkey recipe -about.com” .

This is what I used to do until I discovered this: http://www.google.com/reviews/t
(this will not work unless you are logged into your google account first).
If you don’t have one, sign up for one, they are free.

This allows you to permanently  block or exclude websites you do not want in your search results.
If you change your mind, you can go back and edit your choices, so no worries there.
So block away and enjoy better results that YOU want in your searches.

Good luck with blocking sites you want to avoid.

Also please leave a comment and tell me what sites you were going crazy enough on to find this post.

This post is my highest traffic post! People from all over land here trying to block sites that they do not want to see in their results.

I would love to hear your story!

WordCamp San Francisco 2011 Volunteering

Matt Mullenweg-Linda Lee-Rebecca Martin

Rebecca Martin, Linda Lee and Matt Mullenweg, Founder and bossman of WordPress

I do professional Volunteer Coordinating for organizations as a  PT job so I am always involved with volunteer opportunities. Here is a good one for all Bay Area WordPress users.

This will be my 4th year volunteering for #WCSF WordPress WordCamp San Francisco, and they just put their form up for those who are interested.  I can’t image doing this a week and half before a 3 day event, yipes, I do not envy that person. 8-O .

I emailed a pitch for the job of Volunteer Coordinator for #WCSF to Matt Mullenweg, but he did not get back to me! Gee maybe he is busy or something, lol. Anyway I wanted to get this up for those of you who would like to attend and help behind the scenes, which to me is always more fun then just being an attendee.

Click here for the 2011 Volunteer Form for WordCamp SF.

If you volunteer this year and found out about it from my blog post, please leave me a comment below or stop by and say Hello at the event. I will be working there Saturday and Sunday. Not sure where yet, but I will update when I get my assignment.

You can see the schedule here for speakers and sessions.  I also listed them below.
I am very excited this year because Brian Gardner of StudioPress Themes for WordPress and Copyblogger will be there and he said for me to look for him so we can chat a bit. I have been using his themes since he made and gave them away for free. I almost use StudioPress Themes for WordPress themes exclusively now.  Brian also has a great blog he writes and is someone to follow on twitter for sure.

If you buy a StudioPress Pro Plus All-Theme Package, one of the perks is getting access to their support forum, where I met Rebecca Diamond, one of their moderators who has helped me so much over the years in that forum, and who is attending WordCamp SF this year as well. I want to a photo with both of them!

Video of saving a whale from fishermans net. Are whales intelligent like humans?

Freeing humpback whale from fishermens nettingI went out to dinner with two of my friends, Elisa Southard, (author of “Break Through the Noise“) and Barbara Santos, (author of “Practice Aloha: Secrets to Living Life Hawaiian Style” ). We had a grand old time.

We were celebrating Barbara’s birthday, (Happy Birthday Barb!), and Elisa asked us if we had seen the video of these people who work with the Great Whale Conservatory, saving a whale, and she emailed it to us. I got a kick out of the fact that as we were talking, Elisa could get on her Android phone  and email us a link, and look things up, like books we were discussing and other things in conversation. This is how modern life has evolved with technology today.

The video is amazing and I just had to share it with you. It made me cry when they cut the humpback whale free from all these yards of netting it had gotten terribly tangled in and the whale was near death. It seemed to know they were helping it, and once free it put on a heck of show for them which seemed like a thank you to me and to them.

This made me wonder, do whales have higher intelligence? I googled the question and found this:

“Whales boast the brain cells that ‘make us human”

Whales may share our kind of intelligence, researchers say after discovering brain cells previously found only in humans and other primates.

They were touted as the brain cells that set humans and the other great apes apart from all other mammals. Now it has been discovered that some whales also have spindle neurons – specialised brain cells that are involved in processing emotions and helping us interact socially.

Spindle cells, named after their long, spindle-shaped bodies, are the cells that are credited with allowing us to feel love and to suffer emotionally. Their discovery in whales will stimulate debate both on the level of whale intelligence and on the ethics of hunting them.

The cells occur in parts of the human brain that are thought to be responsible for our social organisation, empathy, speech, intuition about the feelings of others, and rapid “gut” reactions.

Is Twitter dying or dead? Why Biz Stone the founder has left the company

Do you think twitter is dead?Who is really using Twitter today?
When Twitter started, I seriously thought it would never catch on, ( but I also thought DVD players would not replace VHS, so I definitely can miss the boat big time.)
Now wherever you go, any conference, any “Internet Marketing” type of gathering, you are told to use twitter and other “social media”.
I even signed up and have been using Tweetdeck, since Tee Morris taught a class with me at the San Francisco Writers Conference on Social Media.
I found Tweetdeck made using Twitter a much more personal type of interface. Yet after awhile I found myself getting distracted by the constant notification chirps and new tweets even though I only have about 10 people/companies I am following. You can turn off the chirps, (which I happen to like actually).  The thing is I already get distracted while working online, and I found keeping Tweetdeck open all the time did not help. There are some benefits, I have found following StudioPress Themes for WordPress and Brian Gardner very helpful and a great resource for me personally, since I use those products ( amazing  WordPress website themes)  in my business.  I greatly admire the wisdom shared by  the founder of  Studio Press, Brian Gardner.  He is a  fun and inspirational guy to follow. Other then that, I have found I am back to checking Twitter about once a week.
I have set it up so that when I blog it automatically tweets my new posts for me.
Part of my philosophy about working online is to try to minimize distractions and stay the course on what you are trying to accomplish.
So it was with great interest that I read this article about why the creator of Twitter, Biz Stone has left the company.

http://www.fastcompany.com/1763873/why-biz-stone-really-left-twitter

A few items jumped out at me.

The majority of  Twitter users, some 190 million as of a year ago, are largely disengaged, tuning in during earthquakes, elections, and scandals. At the end of March of this year, Business Insider reported that:

  • There were 119 million Twitter accounts following one or more other accounts.
  • There were 85 million accounts with one or more followers.
  • Thus, a little subtraction shows us that there are 56 million Twitter accounts following zero other accounts, and 90 million Twitter accounts with zero followers.

“With all the noise on Twitter, the conversations vanished. The vast majority of Twitter accounts are not very active. The ones that are, are largely self-serving.”
This has been my experience with my clients and people I know. What do you think the future looks like for twitter?
Are you an active user? Do you enjoy using twitter? Do you wish twitter would just die and go away?
Leave me a comment and lets discuss this topic!

What is a gravatar, and how do I get one?

Linda Lee image Author, Writer, Web designerMany people ask me how to get a gravatar, or really they ask me this, ” How do I get one of those photos that will show up next to my name on other websites”? Many people do not even know what a gravatar is. A gravatar is an image you select , that is attached to whichever email you select, when you sign up for a gravatar here. http://en.gravatar.com/.

This image to the left of me is a gravatar I custom created. I was just using my headshot, but I noticed many places I left a gravatar, left no way of knowing who I was or where I could found. I took one of my images and just added my business name on top there, and now I use this as one of my gravatars.

Another nice thing with gravatars are you can have multiple emails and images attached to each email, so you do not have to have the same image all the time.

  • What do you use a gravatar for?
Well if you are online much, you problally have a business, a book, a product or just yourself that you would like to promote or have known better, right? So when you leave comments on other websites or in forums, most of the time if you have a gravatar set up, when you leave an email on that part of leaving a comment, (totally private) it will show your gravatar.
Membership websites on WordPress will show your gravatar. Many different places use this gravatar set up.
  • Is is hard to set up a gravatar?
Not at all. I have made a short video to show you how easy it is.
All you need to do really is sign up, find a small image you want to use and upload it and that it is, you are ready to go!

  • If you have any questions or comments please leave them below and good luck with your new gravatars!

Traditional Yellow Pages obsolete? San Francisco moves to ban the phone book

Yellow pages being banned San Francisco first cityI saw this coming years ago. When I first started speaking in 2006 on why everyone needs a website, one of my examples was that the Internet was becoming the online version of the Yellow Pages. This has certainly come true. If you have a business, you must have some type of web presence. Google Places will show your business if you have a business address, and you can be found online with their Google “Place Pages” local directory.
This is certainly better then nothing, which is what would of happened before. Now if someone looks for you online, your business name, address and phone will come up. People have asked me how this is happening when they never signed up or registered for this service. Google is simply putting public information online. If you find yourself on this and want to edit or change it or add a website location, you just need to “claim” your business.

Another item you may notice when looking at the Google Place pages is people can leave reviews for your business or services there. If you have no website or web presence of some type, you
are not driving or presenting your message at all.
This can be frustrating for the users/clients/customers who are trying to learn more about you online, find some answers to questions about you, or compare your business to other choices they may be looking at.

Hundred’s of small businesses still do not have a website. This is just bad business in today’s world. I have no doubt that eventually the various versions of paper phone books will stop being printed. Everyone has a cell phone now, and most of them have the capability to go online and find addresses, directions, maps, and everything you need when you are searching for a place.

To read more about San Francisco’s board of Supervisors decision, click here.

Tell me what you think of the possible end of the traditional yellow pages?
Is this a good thing?
Do you still use the hard copy version?
Is it the end of an era?

Osama Bin Laden video or photos of him dead are a scam and sites have a virus

Osama Bin Laden DeadBefore the White House had even  finished announcing the death of Osama Bin Laden, the scammers, crooks and nasty nasty hackers and thieves were up and running with the enticement of photos of a dead Bin Laden and fake Osama Bin Laden death videos. People searching for “osama bin laden dead” or “osama binladen” (links are taken from trending topics on google, they offer tons of articles and info if you click them.)
could very well  find themselves on fake websites offering a download for a photo or video of him dead. If you happen to go to any of these fake sites, they are placing password stealing malware, trojans or spyware on your computer.

As of yesterday any photo of bin Laden’s corpse found on Facebook should be considered fake.

The U.S. has not yet released any photos or video of bin Laden’s body, but ABC News has reported it is likely they will release a photo of the deceased terrorist as well as video of the former al-Qaida leader’s burial.

Many emails with links to video of Osama bin Laden’s death have also been going around that could contain viruses. If you see any email with links referencing this, delete it immediately.

If you have gone to any of these sites, you need to run and tried to download or view something you should run a clean up ASAP on your machine. I highly recommend these products.
I am posting the FREE download links, and these links I am posting are safe to download from.

1. Malwarebytes -Download here most of the time, this one product does the trick!

2. AVAST- to keep your computer safe all the time. Download here.

3. Spybot search and destroy- Download here.

Since it looks like they are going to release some official images and video today, it will get even worse.

The best way to keep yourself safe is to only view things from trusted sources like news sites.
